Derby Spina

Handbag made of genuine USA leather as well as top quality USA made hardware, the Derby Spina was born from the idea of trying to capture the strength of my mother and how every woman, in all aspects of her life, should always have her “backbone” metaphorically speaking. The name is a combination derived from the use of USA Derby Cattle leather and the Latin word for spine, spina. The blood red interior lining also lends itself to symbolizing the essence of a woman’s raw, unique self.

Given that a woman’s handbag is not only a representation of herself and her style, I wanted this bag to serve as a reminder to women that they should never cower in the face of challenges and if they ever feel they are lacking their “backbone” in a situation, they can look at their “Derby Spina” and be reaffirmed of their own inner strength.

The Derby Spina is both striking and functional- beginning with the front flap which resembles a spine and ribs but the most inventive part of the bag comes in the form of a small Bluetooth tracking device (removable if necessary or desired) covered in leather and made into a key chain so that the days of a woman losing or having their bag stolen would be a thing of the past. This new tracker, created by Phone Halo, is connected to a free application which works with a variety of devices (IPhone, IPad, Android, among others) and is entirely customizable.

The tracker alerts you through a series of beeps when you’re separated from your bag; helps you find your bag simply by clicking the alert button on your phone or other device, emits no heat through the use of a 3- volt battery (similar to one used in hearing aids); uses low frequency Bluetooth technology so that even if you don’t have cellular service, the pairing through Bluetooth still allows you to locate your bag and uses “Crowd Source Tracking Technology” in the event that your bag has been misplaced or stolen. With a battery life of up to two years, this small but valuable addition to the “Derby Spina” adds to the innovative design by combining style, technology and functionality all in one bag.
